About the CPCT typing test
CPCT is the computer proficiency certificate required for many Madhya Pradesh government jobs. After a 75-minute objective section, candidates take two 15-minute typing tests – one in English and one in Hindi. Data Entry Operator posts commonly require 30 wpm English or 20 wpm Hindi net speed. The CPCT interface highlights the current word and shows the passage above the typing area, which is reproduced here.

How the CPCT typing test is evaluated
Net words per minute
Gross speed = (key depressions ÷ 5) ÷ minutes for English, or actual words ÷ minutes for Hindi.
Net speed = gross speed − (mistakes ÷ minutes). Full mistakes count as 1 and half mistakes as ½.
You qualify when your net speed reaches the required speed and your error percentage stays within the notified limit.
Worked example: At 30 wpm for 15 minutes you need about 450 correct words. With a 10% error limit, that leaves room for roughly 45 full mistakes.
Read the complete explanation with more examples in How typing speed is calculated in government exams.
Preparation tips for CPCT
- Practise both languages back-to-back for 15 minutes each – switching mental layout is a skill in itself.
- Choose one Hindi layout (Remington Gail is popular among MP typists) and stick with it.
- CPCT Hindi passages contain many conjuncts (संयुक्ताक्षर) – drill क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, श्र and half letters.
