About the SSC CHSL typing test

The SSC CHSL Skill Test is the qualifying Tier-II stage for LDC and JSA posts. It is conducted on computers using the TCS iON interface: a passage appears in the upper pane, you type in the lower pane, and the timer counts down in the header. The software does not highlight words or show your live speed, so candidates who practise only on colourful practice sites are often surprised on exam day. This simulator reproduces that plain interface and evaluates your answer with the SSC method of full and half mistakes.

How the SSC CHSL typing test is evaluated

SSC-style evaluation: key depressions, full and half mistakes

Speed is measured in key depressions: every letter, space and punctuation mark you press counts. 35 words per minute is equivalent to 10,500 key depressions per hour because one “word” is taken as 5 key depressions.

Your typed matter is compared word by word with the passage. Omitting a word, typing a wrong or misspelt word, or adding a word that is not in the passage is a full mistake.

Spacing errors (two words joined or one word split), wrong capitalisation and punctuation mistakes are half mistakes.

Error percentage = (full mistakes + half mistakes ÷ 2) ÷ words in the passage you attempted × 100. You qualify if your speed meets the requirement and your error percentage is within the limit for your category.

Worked example: To reach 10,500 key depressions per hour in 10 minutes you must type about 1,750 key depressions – roughly 307 average English words including spaces.

Preparation tips for SSC CHSL

  • Do not stop to re-read: the passage pane does not mark your position, so keep your eyes on the source text and trust your fingers.
  • Every spelling mistake is a full mistake – a slow correct word is cheaper than a fast wrong one.
  • Capitalisation and punctuation errors are half mistakes, so do not ignore commas and full stops.
  • Practise with the live-speed display hidden (as in the real test) for at least two weeks before the exam.

New to touch typing? Start with our universal touch typing guide and the step-by-step keyboard lessons, then follow the 30-day plan. For Hindi, read the Hindi typing guide (Inscript & Remington Gail).

About this exam interface

This simulator copies the TCS iON computer-based test layout used by SSC, RRB and many central recruiters: a header with the exam name, candidate details and a countdown timer, the passage in an upper pane, and a plain typing box below it. There is no word highlighting and no live speed meter – exactly like the real test.

Want to practise a passage from a previous year or your coaching notes? Add it in My Paragraphs – it stays in your browser and appears in the passage list of every simulator.

SSC CHSL typing test – FAQs

How many words do I need to type in the SSC CHSL typing test?

For English you need about 350 correct words in 10 minutes (35 wpm). For Hindi you need about 300 words (30 wpm). SSC actually counts key depressions – 10,500 per hour for English – so longer words also help.

Is backspace allowed in the SSC CHSL typing test?

Yes, backspace and the arrow keys work in the TCS iON typing window, but there is no spell-check. Corrections cost time, so aim for accuracy in the first attempt.

What is a half mistake in the SSC typing test?

Errors of spacing, capitalisation and punctuation are usually treated as half mistakes, while omission, substitution, addition of words and spelling errors are full mistakes.

Is this SSC CHSL typing test free?

Yes. TypingPrep is completely free. There is no registration – your results and your own paragraphs are stored only in your browser.

Does this SSC CHSL practice test look like the real exam?

This simulator copies the TCS iON computer-based test layout used by SSC, RRB and many central recruiters: a header with the exam name, candidate details and a countdown timer, the passage in an upper pane, and a plain typing box below it. There is no word highlighting and no live speed meter – exactly like the real test.
