About the Institutes JA typing test

Premier institutes such as IITs, NITs and IIMs often conduct the Junior Assistant typing test themselves, in Microsoft Word with spell-check and auto-correct disabled. A printed or on-screen passage of about 350 words is given for 10 minutes at 35 wpm. Our MS Word-style simulator reproduces the document window, ribbon look and plain page so the first time you see it is not on exam day.

Institutes JA typing test rules

  • English: 35 wpm in 10 minutes (about 350 words).
  • Typed in MS Word; spelling and auto-correct are turned off.
  • Net speed usually = (words typed − incorrect/extra words) ÷ minutes.

Always check the latest notification. Recruiting bodies revise speed, duration and error rules from time to time. Information here was last reviewed on 18 October 2026. You can change the required speed and error limit in the simulator’s Advanced options.

How the Institutes JA typing test is evaluated

Net words per minute

Gross speed = (key depressions ÷ 5) ÷ minutes for English, or actual words ÷ minutes for Hindi.

Net speed = gross speed − (mistakes ÷ minutes). Full mistakes count as 1 and half mistakes as ½.

You qualify when your net speed reaches the required speed and your error percentage stays within the notified limit.

Worked example: At 35 wpm for 10 minutes you need about 350 correct words. With a 5% error limit, that leaves room for roughly 17 full mistakes.

Read the complete explanation with more examples in How typing speed is calculated in government exams.

Preparation tips for Institutes JA

  • Turn off auto-correct in your own Word at home and practise there too.
  • Do not press Enter at the end of every line – let the text wrap; press Enter only for new paragraphs.

New to touch typing? Start with our universal touch typing guide and the step-by-step keyboard lessons, then follow the 30-day plan. For Hindi, read the Hindi typing guide (Inscript & Remington Gail).
